The Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix originated in 1982 as a Formula One event on a downtown street circuit. After a six-year hiatus, the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix returned to the Motor City in 2007 with the Downtown Detroit Partnership, chaired by Roger Penske, spearheading the effort.
